Key inside, door shut? Or your keys lost somewhere in the city? We open most Amsterdam doors without any damage and are usually with you within 20 minutes.
The internet is full of tricks with bank cards, screwdrivers and bits of plastic. In an Amsterdam flat they almost never work, because most doors here have a cylinder lock that latches when it closes, and many have a multi-point lock. What those tricks do achieve is a scratched door, a bent latch or a broken cylinder — and then you are paying for the opening and a new lock.
Call instead. Tell us the address and the floor, whether the key is inside or lost, and whether there is a shared street door in front of your own. We bring the right tools and give you the fixed price before we leave.
If your key is simply inside, opening the door is the whole job. Your lock stays as it is and you pay only for the opening.
If your key is lost or stolen, opening is only half of it. You do not know who has that key, and if it was on a ring with a tag, an address or your post, that is a real risk. In that case we advise replacing the cylinder straight away — see lock and cylinder replacement. It is a small job and every old key stops working immediately.
Most Amsterdam buildings have a shared street door with dozens of keys on one cylinder. If that door will not open any more, or your key snapped off in it, we remove the broken part, measure the cylinder and replace it if it is worn. We can also supply matching cylinders so every resident opens the street door, their own door and the bike storage with a single key. For an owners' association we put the proposal and the fixed price in writing for the meeting.
We open doors only for the person who lives there. We therefore ask for ID and proof of address — a rental contract, a bank statement or a piece of post will do. We ask this of every customer, in every neighbourhood. It is the reason you can trust that nobody gets your door opened either.
